Petro-Canada continues the legacy of the James Worrall Flag Bearer Award. Though our friend, James Worrall (1914 — 2011), is no longer with us, his Olympic spirit continues to be reflected in the athletes who are presented this award in his honour.
Mr. Worrall competed in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and proudly represented our nation as flag bearer.
Apart from his athletic achievements, Mr. Worrall was also a dedicated sports executive and ambassador for the Canadian Olympic movement.
Since 2002, Petro-Canada has presented the James Worrall Flag Bearer Award to Canadian athletes that lead our Olympic and Paralympic teams into the stadium during opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.
Petro-Canada will continue to present this award in honour of our friend and Olympic ambassador James Worrall.
The award consists of a beautiful sculpture designed and created by renowned Canadian artist Micah Lexier. Like our athletes, it is solid, impressive and undeniably Canadian. Athens 2004 marked the first time Paralympic athletes received the award.
